It was a large photograph in a heavy silver frame. The picture was my junior-year school portrait, the one with my long hair and the closed-mouth smile I wore to hide my braces. Beneath it, a brass plaque carried the words: “In Loving Memory of Brynn Elise Harper. 1996 to 2014. Forever Our Angel.” Beside the frame was an Easter church bulletin from Grace Fellowship. On the back, an announcement invited the congregation to the seventh annual blessing of the Brynn Harper dogwood, planted in memory of Grant Harper’s sister, who had supposedly died in the spring of 2014. I sat down because my legs could no longer support me. Suddenly, everything made sense. The candle beside my portrait, the missing photographs, the locked bedroom, the toothbrush in my glove box, and the obituary that had omitted my name. My family had told the Ashcrofts I was dead.<\/p>\n
For seven years, every weekend, I had been forced out of my own home so the daughter they had buried could never appear at the front door. Even the dogwood I had personally selected for Ellie had been planted in a church garden as a memorial to me. I had written its care instructions without knowing I was helping create my own memorial. That night, I gathered my medication, the yellow notebook containing 311 dated tally marks, my grandmother’s funeral program, and her quilt. I placed the notebook beside the silver frame and left the funeral program on top. Then I wrote one sentence on a sticky note and placed it over my photograph: “Green means living.” I walked out, drove to Hattie’s farm, and told her everything. She listened quietly before telling me I could stay. I never returned to that house.<\/p>\n
