I built a life outside the house, even though my family never showed any interest in it. I found work at a large garden center on Russell Parkway and gradually became someone customers requested by name. I learned about shrubs, trees, and perennials, while contractors began trusting my recommendations. Whenever I was sent away for the weekend, I returned to Hattie’s farm, where she taught me how to graft peach trees. She showed me how to join a cutting from one tree to another rootstock, creating something stronger together. I also learned to examine damaged trees and search beneath the surface for signs of life. At home, however, I continued making myself invisible.

When my grandmother died, I attended her funeral but stayed behind a pillar while Ellie and her parents sat with my family. Later, I read the obituary alone in my car. It listed one surviving daughter and one grandson. My name wasn’t there. I folded the program and kept it in my coat pocket. Two years later, Ellie unexpectedly walked into my garden center wearing nursing school scrubs. She needed a dogwood for her church’s memorial garden because her fiancé’s family had lost someone. I selected a healthy white Cherokee Princess with a strong graft and balanced branches. On its care tag, I wrote the instructions Hattie had taught me: “Graft is good. Water deep the first summer. She’ll bloom.” As Ellie loaded the tree into her car, she studied my face and said I looked like someone she should know. I almost told her the truth, but I stayed silent.
