There was something else Emily needed me to understand. She hadn’t hidden the diagnosis because she was afraid of Jake. Throughout the entire ordeal, he had been supportive and loving. She had hidden it because of me. Because I had been planning the celebration since June. Because I had borrowed tables, contacted relatives, organized the decorations, and announced the event publicly. My sister was even traveling from Wexford to attend. Emily had watched how excited I was and couldn’t bring herself to ruin something I had spent months preparing. Then she said something that I have never forgotten: “You were so happy about it.”<\/p>\n

Yet she was also worrying about disappointing her mother over a party. She had spent five weeks carrying that burden while I talked about cupcakes and folding tables. No police action followed. Jake withdrew the complaint on Sunday morning, and Deborah refunded half the money but refused to accept an apology. Emily was admitted to the specialist unit that Sunday afternoon, one day later than planned. Instead of spending Saturday night driving alone, she had stayed in my spare room.<\/p>\n
