Beneath the name, Lily and another girl had written: “Nobody Carries It Alone.” Natalie looked from the banner to the families and finally to me. Later, we spoke privately in the kitchen. “You could have told me,” she said. I answered quietly, “I did. I called you and asked for help with the groceries.” Her eyes filled as she tried to explain her demanding job, her husband, and her responsibilities. I listened, then told her I wasn’t angry anymore. I had mistaken my grief for anger because I had spent so many years believing love meant being useful. I placed a list of every check I’d written her over eight years on the counter. I wasn’t asking for repayment. I simply wanted her to see that I’d been paying attention, even when she hadn’t.

She and Greg eventually attended counseling, and Greg apologized for suggesting assisted living. In April, Natalie volunteered at the house, tutoring a boy named Marcus in fractions without once checking her phone. In May, she carried my grocery bags inside without being asked. In June, Judith and I flew to Lisbon, and Natalie drove us to the airport. As I walked those beautiful tiled streets, I sent her a postcard saying I was managing beautifully and was glad she was on the other end of the line.
