When I finally left the hospital, Dad drove me home in a borrowed car with the heater turned all the way up. He carried my backpack inside carefully and had hung my jacket beside the front door. On the shelf was a new brass key ring engraved with my name. He told me the door would never be locked against me again. He also promised that if I ever wanted to leave, he would help me pack. For weeks, I slept with my bedroom door open and my boots beside the bed. Dad began cooking dinner every night, badly, and asking about school. He cut back his work hours and attended every counseling appointment. When Marissa returned that spring, she stood on the porch before knocking. I opened the door myself, and we held hands quietly.<\/p>\n
Two years have passed. I am eighteen, Marissa has been clean for twenty-two months, and she works at a local bakery. Our relationship is different now, but it is built on something I can trust. Dad and I walk beside the lake every Sunday, and he has never demanded my forgiveness. I applied to three colleges and received an acceptance from the University of Minnesota Duluth, with a scholarship named after a nurse. I sat beneath the same porch light where I once waited helplessly for the door to open. Dad joined me and placed the brass key in my palm, even though I already had one. I finally understood: he was not giving me permission to enter. He was reminding me that I had always belonged. A home should never make someone afraid to stay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
