I visited Diane and asked about the lake property. She explained that my grandparents had left the land to her, and she had retained ownership for years. Ray had recently contacted her, requesting permission to build a wedding pavilion there. She refused, but he apparently continued telling relatives that the property belonged to the family. Diane showed me the deed and several letters confirming her ownership. I couldn’t believe my father was still making promises involving property that wasn’t his. It seemed he had built an entire story around things he didn’t own.<\/p>\n
Megan later sent me photographs of messages between Ray and several relatives. He had described the lake as his future inheritance and suggested that the wedding would help establish his family’s connection to the property. I called Megan and explained everything carefully. She was devastated, but she thanked me for telling her before the ceremony. I also showed her the trust statements. She began crying when she realized that her father had spent years telling everyone I had abandoned the family. For the first time, she understood why I had disappeared.<\/p>\n
