On September twentieth, I arrived at Whitaker Farm wearing a proper suit, although I made no effort to hide my scarred hands. Sydney was waiting near the entrance, carrying a bouquet decorated with beautiful dogwood blossoms. She walked beside me toward the arch, just as she had once walked beside our father beneath the tree in our childhood photographs. Preston stood beneath the steel flowers wearing his tuxedo, with a small bandage still covering his wrist. When he saw me, he stepped forward and offered his entire hand. I shook it firmly.<\/p>\n
Garland later stood before three hundred guests and shared the story of my father’s kindness. He held up my invoice and read the words, “No charge for Sid.” Then he showed everyone Preston’s first crooked weld, explaining that it wasn’t beautiful, but it held. He toasted Danny Mercer and the values he had passed to his children. Everyone stood and raised their glasses. For the first time, I realized that the hands my family had once been ashamed of were being celebrated by the very people they had tried to impress.<\/p>\n
