Josephine was Rochelle’s sister, and she had apparently been told that the villa was now part of the family property. She was carrying a box of decorations while Rochelle walked around giving instructions. Garrett was measuring the living room wall, discussing where to place a large television. My father stood near the fireplace, looking unusually proud of himself. They were behaving as if they had already completed the transfer and had every right to live there. I immediately called Marcus and sent him the security footage. He told me the county had already received the suspicious deed, and the authorities were prepared to investigate.

I almost laughed at the irony. They had entered a property they didn’t own, using a document they knew was false, and somehow I was the person they considered unreasonable. Then the lights went out, the shutters dropped, and the recorded warning filled the house.
