The night everything changed, I was sitting in a small apartment nearly four hundred miles away when every light inside my father’s villa suddenly went out. I watched the security cameras on my phone as the darkness swallowed the living room. Four seconds later, the emergency system activated, and heavy steel shutters dropped over every window. My father, Robert, jumped from his chair, shouting for someone to find the main switch. Rochelle, his wife, began searching the walls while Garrett, her adult son, turned on his phone flashlight. None of them understood what was happening. Then the front door locked automatically, and a calm recorded voice announced, “Unauthorized occupants detected. Local authorities have been notified.”

I watched everything from my screen, my hands resting quietly on the desk. Rochelle rushed toward the security camera and started shouting my name, demanding that I open the doors. My phone rang almost immediately. It was Marcus, my attorney, who had helped me purchase the property. “Natalie, the sheriff is already on the way,” he said. “The county flagged the deed your father filed in March. Whatever happens tonight, don’t interfere with the system.” I looked at the camera showing my father standing in the middle of the living room. He was holding a small box, and his face had turned completely pale. He still didn’t know that I had kept the evidence of everything he had done.
