Walter had been part of my life since I was forty-four years old. When my husband, Frank, suffered a heart attack in 1998, Walter heard him shouting through the wall and broke down our back door to get him help. After Frank passed away, Walter mowed my lawn every Saturday for an entire summer, repaired my kitchen faucet, and sat with me on the porch whenever grief made it difficult to speak. When his wife, Ruth, died eleven years ago, I returned that kindness. I brought him meals, checked on him every morning, and made sure he took his medication. We had become more than neighbors. We were family without sharing the same blood. Last winter, my daughter Colleen finally convinced me to spend several months with her in Florida. Before leaving, I stocked Walter’s refrigerator, wrote my phone number in large letters beside his telephone, and made him promise to call every Sunday. He laughed and told me he was 101 years old, not helpless. Every Sunday, he called and repeated the same words: “I’m fine, Margaret. Don’t worry about me. Enjoy the sunshine.”

I believed him because I trusted him. What I didn’t know was that Walter became seriously ill just weeks after I left. One January morning, a young mother named Sarah Mitchell noticed that his curtains were still closed. Walter always opened them at seven, without exception, and everyone on Maple Street knew it. Sarah lived three houses away with her three children. She worked nights cleaning offices downtown, earning eleven dollars an hour while trying to raise Hazel, Ben, and little Toby alone. Her husband had abandoned them two years earlier, leaving behind unpaid bills and no child support. Despite being exhausted after another night at work, Sarah decided to knock on Walter’s door. Nobody answered. She knocked again and eventually heard a faint voice upstairs. Finding the front door unlocked, she entered and discovered Walter lying in bed, shivering beneath three blankets. He had been too weak to get up for two days. Sarah immediately called 911, arranged for someone to watch her youngest child, and accompanied Walter to the hospital. He had pneumonia and needed four days of treatment.
