“Mr. Walter Brennan,” the judge said, looking over his glasses, “do you understand that you could go to jail for this?” Walter nodded slowly. “Yes, Your Honor.” At 101 years old, he stood before the courtroom gripping his wooden cane with both hands. His old brown suit hung loosely from his fragile shoulders, and his eyes remained fixed on the floor. The charges against him were serious. Over four months, he had stolen more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from ValueMart. Security cameras had captured him taking baby clothes, toddler socks, canned food, children’s vitamins, school supplies, and winter coats. Store employees had warned him several times, but he kept returning. Judge Raymond Ellison studied the photographs before looking at Walter again. “Why would a man your age risk going to prison for things you don’t even need?” Walter swallowed hard. “I don’t have an excuse, Your Honor. I’m guilty.”

The judge removed his glasses. “Then give me one reason why I shouldn’t send you to jail.” Walter remained silent, his hands trembling around his cane. I couldn’t take it anymore. I stood up so quickly that my purse fell to the courtroom floor. “Because there’s something you don’t know about him!” I shouted. Every head turned toward me, including Walter’s. His expression changed immediately. “Margaret,” he whispered, shaking his head. “Please don’t.” My name is Margaret Daly, and Walter Brennan had been my neighbor for thirty years. I knew the kind of man he was, the sacrifices he had made, and the reason he had risked everything. I had promised him I would keep his secret, but watching him face prison at 101 years old was something I couldn’t accept. I stepped forward, looked directly at the judge, and prepared to explain why a man who had never stolen anything in his entire life suddenly became a criminal.
