I spent the afternoon listening to Kaylee explain what had happened during those five weeks. Tara had made her complete chores before school, limited the food she could take, and repeatedly threatened to send her away. Rick treated the camper like a prison, checking the door at night and making sure the heater remained unplugged. Whenever Kaylee complained about the cold, Tara told her she was exaggerating. I felt a mixture of anger and guilt. I had been sending money home, believing I was giving my family everything they needed, while the person I trusted to care for my daughter was making her suffer.

My sister arrived later that afternoon, and I quietly explained the situation. She was horrified, especially when she saw Kaylee’s condition. We decided not to warn Tara before securing the evidence. My sister helped Kaylee organize the recordings and made copies so nothing could disappear. Meanwhile, I contacted my attorney and explained that I suspected someone was attempting to misuse my daughter’s education trust. He advised me to preserve every document and avoid making threats that could interfere with the investigation. That evening, Tara began preparing for the birthday gathering, acting as though everything in the house was perfectly normal. She had no idea that Kaylee’s recordings were about to expose the truth.
