I carried Kaylee into the house, wrapped her in warm blankets, and made her something hot to drink. She kept apologizing for being cold, as if she believed she had done something wrong. Every few minutes, she glanced toward the kitchen, afraid Tara might discover she was inside. I couldn’t understand how this had happened while I was working across the country. After Kaylee’s biological mother, Amy, died from cancer, I had promised myself that our daughter would never have to worry about her future. I had even established an education trust worth approximately $310,000 to make sure she could attend college and build a secure life.

When I married Tara, I believed she would become someone Kaylee could depend on. At first, everything seemed fine. But after Tara’s brother Rick moved into our house, the atmosphere slowly changed. He began making decisions, criticizing Kaylee, and treating the house as if it belonged to him. Tara started defending him whenever disagreements happened. Kaylee told me that the forty dollars had disappeared from Tara’s purse, but Rick had taken it. Instead of admitting what happened, they blamed Kaylee. Then Tara began talking about sending my daughter to a residential program that cost $9,800 every month. Kaylee had overheard them discussing the possibility of using her education trust to pay for it.
