A few minutes later, the dining facility manager arrived after hearing about the confrontation. He recognized my name and immediately greeted me warmly. He explained that the base had invited several retired service members to visit that week, and he was surprised to learn what had happened. Reese tried to explain himself, but the manager asked him to wait while he spoke with the soldiers who had witnessed the incident. I didn’t want anyone to lose their career over one foolish moment, but I also believed his behavior needed to be addressed. I told the manager that I wanted an honest apology and a reminder that authority was supposed to come with responsibility.

Before I left, the young private introduced herself as Emily. She told me that she had recently joined the Army and sometimes struggled to speak when senior soldiers behaved unfairly. I asked her why she had enlisted. She said her grandfather had served and taught her that the uniform represented service, not superiority. I smiled because those were words I wished Reese had remembered. I told Emily to hold on to that belief, even when doing so became uncomfortable. Then I asked her to walk with me toward the memorial wall. We stood together for a moment, looking at the names of people who had given so much without expecting applause.
