“Hey, Grandma. What was your rank back in the Stone Age?” Sergeant Reese called out as he approached my table. I didn’t look up. I’d driven forty minutes to enjoy a bowl of chili, and I wasn’t about to let a rude young man ruin my lunch. My name is Quinn Braddock. I’m eighty-one years old, a retired school nurse, and I live alone in a little yellow house in Clarksville, Tennessee. That Thursday, I was visiting the dining facility at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, wearing my favorite gray wool coat and church shoes. Three young soldiers stood over me, laughing as though embarrassing an old woman was the funniest thing they’d done all week.

“This is a military installation,” Reese said, placing his tray on the neighboring table. “You need a pass to be here. Or did you wander over from the retirement home looking for a free meal?” His two friends laughed. The room grew quiet, and several soldiers turned to watch. Reese leaned forward, placed both hands on my table, and demanded to see my identification. I noticed the stripes on his uniform, the eagle tattoo on his forearm, and the blue shield with a white heron on his shoulder. I recognized that emblem immediately. I slowly put down my spoon, looked at him, and took a sip of water. He had no idea who he was speaking to.
