That evening, Renee asked whether she could stay for tea. Sitting together in my yellow kitchen, she finally explained the fear behind her behavior. Her mother had developed early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and lived in a memory care facility that cost $9,000 every month. Renee and Daniel had been paying the bills for years, taking on a second mortgage and working exhausting hours. She feared that I would eventually require the same care and that they would face another overwhelming responsibility. Instead of talking honestly with me, she had begun pushing me toward retirement communities. Her fear didn’t excuse the way she had treated me, but it helped me understand what she had been carrying. I told Lorraine I wanted to pay for Renee’s mother’s care for as long as she needed it. When Lorraine questioned why I would help after everything that had happened, I explained that I knew what it felt like to become invisible while taking care of someone. I wanted to lift a burden from Renee’s shoulders, not purchase her forgiveness.

I refused to give Daniel and Renee the Willow Creek house. It was my home, and I intended to remain there for the rest of my life. When I died, it would pass to Chloe and Caleb through a trust, protecting the property from being sold impulsively. I also established college funds for both grandchildren and paid off Daniel and Renee’s second mortgage as an interest-free loan rather than a gift. Daniel asked why I insisted on making them repay it. I told him that patience and responsibility mattered, and I wanted him to understand what it meant to owe someone without being pressured or humiliated. I donated much of the remaining money to the Alzheimer’s Association and Catalina High School, where Harold had taught woodshop. The school used the funds to build a new workshop in his honor. Above its entrance, the students placed a handmade sign that read, “EVERY SHOP NEEDS A BENCH FOR THE SECOND TRY.” Harold had spent his life teaching young people to build things with their hands. I wanted his legacy to help others discover what they could create.
