For months, Daniel and Renee discussed an old craftsman house on Willow Creek Lane in Phoenix. It had four bedrooms, a wide front porch, a swing, a beautiful pecan tree, and an orange grove behind it. Chloe dreamed of having a window seat in the upstairs bedroom, while Caleb imagined catching lizards among the trees. Renee created spreadsheets, and Daniel calculated mortgage payments repeatedly. I listened quietly while preparing their meals, watching them become increasingly excited about a home that seemed to represent everything they wanted. Then a cash investor purchased the property before they could make an offer. They were devastated. Renee complained that the investor would destroy the house, replace its original character with fashionable finishes, and perhaps cut down the pecan tree. I said nothing, but I remembered every detail of that beautiful porch.

Three months earlier, I had purchased a lottery ticket at a Circle K after visiting my cardiologist. When the winning numbers appeared on television, I checked my ticket repeatedly until I finally understood that my life had changed. I called an attorney named Lorraine Vega, who helped me establish Second Cup Holdings and protect my money. I didn’t tell Daniel because I wanted to understand what he truly thought of me. Then, one Thursday evening, everything became clear. At 6:18 p.m., while we sat around a roast chicken dinner, Daniel looked at me and asked, “Mom, when are you finally planning to get your own place?” My grandchildren stared at their plates. They already knew the conversation was coming. I folded my napkin, excused myself, and walked outside. That night, I wrote five things in my notebook: move out, stay calm, protect my assets, buy a home, and remember this feeling.
