In June, I returned to Tucson and bought back the little house on East Linden Street where Harold and I had built our life together. The couple who purchased it from me had moved to Denver, and the property had become a rental filled with neglected furniture and worn-out rooms. With Tomás Herrera, the carpenter who restored Willow Creek, I brought it back to life. The original breakfast nook was still there, and beneath the table I found the initials Harold had carved in 1984: H.B. + M.B. I painted the kitchen yellow again, planted six rose bushes, and restored the porch. Then I donated the house to a program for widows over sixty-five who had lost their husbands and homes and found themselves living with adult children, sometimes becoming useful while feeling invisible. The program was called Second Cup House. Women could live there rent-free for two years while deciding what they wanted for themselves. Its first resident, Dolores Ruiz, was seventy-four and had been sleeping on a cot in her daughter’s garage. When she saw the yellow kitchen, she cried. The next morning, I made her two cups of tea and explained Harold’s belief that the second cup was for staying somewhere you genuinely wanted to be.

Daniel began visiting me on Saturdays. At first, he said little. He would arrive around seven-thirty, sit on the porch steps, and drink tea while we watched the sun rise. Whenever he finished his first cup, he looked at Harold’s sign and asked for another. Slowly, our relationship began to change. One morning, Daniel brought a paper bag containing a piece of mesquite and a wood-burning tool. He wanted to make a sign for his own home, even though he had only a patio instead of a porch. I told him the words should express what he needed to remember. With Tomás’s guidance, Daniel worked on it for months. When he finally brought the finished sign to Willow Creek, I read its message and couldn’t speak: “EVERYONE IN THIS HOUSE IS WANTED. NOT JUST NEEDED.” He explained that he and Renee had talked about what they had done to me and how they treated one another. Chloe had suggested the words because she understood what had been missing from our family. I touched the rough mesquite, feeling the warmth of the sun against it, and told my son it was beautiful.
