When I left Martin’s office, I sat in my car for several minutes, trying to understand how quickly my life had changed. Only days earlier, I had been fired and had no idea how I would provide for my family. Now I had the possibility of a new job with better pay and medical benefits that could help cover Cora’s needs. I called Claire, and when she answered, I could barely find the words. “It’s good,” I finally told her. She asked how good, and I replied that it was better than I had dared to hope. She told me to come home so I could explain everything in person.

A few weeks later, I visited Eleanor at her home. She looked at me and immediately said, “You held my hand.” She remembered being frightened on the highway and knowing that someone had stayed beside her. I told her I simply didn’t want her to be alone. She explained that she had spent thirty-two years teaching middle school science and encouraging children to help others when they had the chance. Before I left, she thanked me for being part of that chain of kindness. I returned home to Claire, Lily, and Cora, realizing that the most important part of the story wasn’t the job I had found. It was the moment I had turned back. I had almost kept driving, but I didn’t. And that was the lesson I hoped my daughters would carry with them for the rest of their lives.
