When I arrived home, Claire was in the kitchen with our daughters. Lily looked up and asked why I was home so early. I told her I was working from home, but I knew I couldn’t hide the truth for long. I went into our bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed, wondering how I would pay the mortgage, cover Cora’s medical bills, and support our family without a job. Claire came in a few minutes later, closed the door, and immediately understood that something was wrong.

I told her everything. She listened without interrupting, then asked whether Nick had really expected me to drive past a woman having a medical emergency. When I said yes, Claire took my hand. “You did the right thing,” she told me. I reminded her that we had bills, property taxes, and children who depended on us. She acknowledged every problem but refused to change her answer. “What would you teach Lily and Cora if you had kept driving?” she asked. I had no response. For the first time that morning, I realized that losing my job wasn’t the only thing at stake. The kind of man I wanted my daughters to become mattered, too.
