Over the next two days, Arthur and I spoke several times. We met for breakfast, watched the waves from the upper deck, and shared stories about our families. He never tried to turn our conversations into a romance or pretend he could repair my marriage. Instead, he reminded me that I still had a life beyond the decision Greg had made. Slowly, I began enjoying the cruise. I laughed at a comedian’s performance, tried a new dish at dinner, and took photographs of the ocean without wishing someone else were standing beside me. For the first time in months, I felt a small piece of myself returning.

On the third evening, I found Arthur sitting alone near the windows, looking troubled. He asked whether I had ever wondered if my husband’s departure had something to do with fear rather than a lack of love. I admitted that I had considered every possibility, but Greg had refused to explain himself. Arthur listened carefully, then reached into his pocket again. This time, he pulled out a folded letter and held it between his fingers. He told me it had been written by his wife shortly before she died. “I’ve carried this for years,” he said. “And there’s something in it I think you need to understand.”
