Wendell’s anger began to crumble as Ruth explained everything she remembered. She had waited for Jimmy, cried over him, and carried the pain of believing he had chosen someone else. She had never known about the accident, the engagement ring, or the three weeks he spent fighting for his life. Wendell realized that neither of them had willingly abandoned the other. They had both been robbed of the truth by the same cruel deception. Tears filled his eyes as he admitted that he had kept the locket because he thought protecting Jimmy meant keeping painful memories away from him.

Then Wendell revealed another heartbreaking detail. Jimmy had never married. He suffered several strokes in his fifties, leaving him with lasting difficulties, and the previous month he had moved into Riverview Manor. Wendell had recently been clearing out Jimmy’s house when he decided to pawn the locket, still carrying years of resentment toward Ruth. Hearing this, Ruth barely managed to speak. The man she had loved was still alive, and he was only a short drive away. She begged Wendell to take her to him, terrified that another moment lost might become another regret she could never repair.
