As the weeks passed, Rowan became more involved in caring for Isla. He attended her appointments, learned how to soothe her when she cried, and took over nighttime feedings whenever he could. His actions gradually helped me feel safer with him again. One evening, while we watched Isla sleeping in her crib, he admitted that the DNA test had changed the way he understood trust. “I thought I needed proof before I could feel secure,” he said. “But I should have trusted the person I married.” I appreciated his honesty, although I reminded him that trust could be damaged much faster than it could be rebuilt.

Barbara also began changing. She stopped offering unwanted opinions and asked before visiting. She even brought a photo album containing pictures of Rowan as a baby, hoping we might discover more family similarities. Looking through those photographs, I noticed that Rowan’s grandmother had remarkably light eyes. We laughed at how easily a family could overlook its own history while searching for someone to blame. That evening, I felt something shift inside me. The hurt hadn’t disappeared, but it no longer controlled every conversation. I began to believe that our family could move forward without pretending the past had never happened.
