Over the next few days, Rowan began visiting Isla regularly. He changed her diapers, held her while she slept, and helped me prepare bottles. Sometimes I caught him staring at her tiny blue eyes, as if he couldn’t believe how badly he had misjudged the situation. I wanted our daughter to grow up with both parents, but I also needed to protect myself from being hurt again. We began talking honestly about what had happened and why he had chosen suspicion instead of asking questions. For the first time, Rowan admitted that he had been afraid of becoming a father and had handled that fear terribly.

A week later, Barbara arrived at my door carrying pastries. She looked uncomfortable and avoided my eyes. “I owe you an apology,” she said. She admitted she had encouraged Rowan’s suspicions because she believed she was protecting her son. I accepted her apology, but I made it clear that her behavior had hurt me deeply. If she wanted to be part of Isla’s life, she would need to respect me as her mother. Barbara nodded quietly. It wasn’t an instant reconciliation, but it was the first time she had acknowledged that her actions had consequences. I hoped we could build something healthier for Isla’s sake.
