The following week, I changed the locks, updated the security codes, and installed cameras around the property. I wasn’t trying to punish my family. I simply wanted to make sure nobody could ever arrive with luggage and assume they had a right to stay. The villa had been my place to rest, but the incident showed me that some relatives viewed it as an emergency backup plan they could claim whenever life became difficult.

A few days later, Mom called again. Her voice sounded different this time. She admitted that selling the family house had been a terrible decision, but she also confessed that Jessica had encouraged them to keep the sale secret because she was convinced I would refuse if I knew everyone was coming. Jessica had apparently told them that once the furniture arrived, I would feel too guilty to send them away. That revelation hurt more than the unexpected guests themselves.

I told Mom that I was willing to help them find temporary housing, but I would not surrender my home. I gave her the contact information for a local housing adviser and offered to help organize their belongings into storage. I also told her that Jessica needed to take responsibility for her own choices. Mom agreed, although she warned me that Jessica was furious and still blamed me for everything.

Months later, my parents finally found a small rental home. They apologized properly, and I accepted the apology without pretending the incident hadn’t changed things. Jessica never apologized. She stopped contacting me altogether. I eventually returned to the villa alone, sat on the balcony, and watched the sunset over the water. I realized the hardest part hadn’t been saying no to my relatives. It had been learning that people who called themselves family could make plans for my life without asking me. From then on, my beach villa had one simple rule: family was always welcome when invited—but nobody would ever confuse love with permission again.
