Delia and her family ended up spending Christmas at a roadside motel instead of the lodge I had paid for. When they returned, Shawn told her that he knew the truth and that my house was not for sale. Their marriage deteriorated quickly after that. By February, they had separated, and Shawn began making plans to live independently.

I gave Shawn sixty days to find a place of his own. I wasn’t throwing him out to punish him. I wanted him to understand that becoming an adult meant making his own decisions and taking responsibility for them. He eventually found a small rental only ten minutes away, close enough for the children to visit whenever they wanted.

The unused portion of the Christmas trip was refunded, and I placed the money into a savings account for my grandchildren. I didn’t want their mother’s choices to take anything away from them. Shawn also began rebuilding our relationship, this time by listening instead of assuming he already knew what I wanted.

The following Christmas, I booked a small cabin myself. It wasn’t luxurious, and it didn’t need to be. Shawn and the children came, and this time I made the room list with my own hand. At the very top was Grandma’s Room. On Christmas morning, my grandson taped the list to the refrigerator and drew a little star beside my name. Shawn burned the pancakes, and the children declared them delicious. We stayed in our pajamas all day, laughing around the little cabin. Nobody left before dawn. Nobody quietly erased my name. And for the first time in a long while, I knew exactly where I belonged.
