I asked Shawn to put Delia on the phone, but she refused to speak with me. Instead, Shawn began asking questions. Little by little, pieces of the story came together. Delia had apparently spent months telling him that I was tired of family gatherings, overwhelmed by the house, and ready to downsize. She had convinced him that leaving me home for Christmas was what I wanted.

But the room list told a different story. My name had been deliberately removed, even though I had paid for the entire trip. Shawn also learned that Delia’s parents had already told friends they expected to move into a large house with a yard. Her sister eventually admitted that Delia had created the room arrangement herself.

The truth hit Shawn hard. He realized the Christmas vacation had never simply been about giving me a quiet holiday. It had been a way to keep me away while plans were being made for my home. The house belonged to me, and I had never authorized anyone to sell it or make decisions about it.

That evening, Shawn loaded his children into the SUV and drove back through the snow. Shortly after midnight, I heard a knock at my door. Shawn stood outside with tears in his eyes. He apologized before even taking off his coat, then sat at my kitchen table and cried harder than I had seen him cry since his father’s funeral. He finally understood how badly he had allowed someone else’s story to change the way he treated his own mother.
