At seventy-two, Elnora Whitsett thought she had lost everything when Henrietta Lockridge died. For twenty-six years, Elnora had cared for Henrietta’s farmhouse, cooked her meals, listened to her stories, and stayed beside her through lonely days. After the funeral, however, Henrietta’s son Carlton handed Elnora a $300 check and told her that her services were no longer needed. He spoke as though twenty-six years of loyalty could be settled with a small envelope. Elnora left quietly, hurt but determined not to beg for a place where she was no longer wanted.

Several days later, Elnora went to the county courthouse to collect a few records connected to the farmhouse. While speaking with the county clerk, she discovered something that made her stop breathing. Henrietta had transferred ownership of the farmhouse and surrounding land eleven months before her death. The deed had already been legally recorded, and the name listed as the new owner wasn’t Carlton or any of Henrietta’s three sons. It was Elnora Whitsett. She could hardly believe what she was seeing. Then the clerk handed her a letter Henrietta had instructed the office to release after her death. Elnora opened it with trembling hands, unaware that the letter would reveal why Henrietta had chosen her—and what her sons had been planning.
