After that night, Sunday dinners changed. Richard still brought flowers, but sometimes he brought Evelyn too. We learned how to make her comfortable, played familiar music, and showed her old photographs whenever she became confused. Chloe became especially patient with her, and Mom seemed happier than I had seen her in years. Richard no longer needed to invent excuses or secretly watch the clock.
