Nobody spoke for several seconds. My mother took the note from my uncle and read it again, her hands trembling. The stranger in the photograph was named Thomas, and according to Grandma’s letter, he had been her closest friend before she met our grandfather. They had planned to marry, but Thomas’s family had moved away unexpectedly after his father became seriously ill. Their goodbye had been painful, and they had promised to write to each other.

The letters continued for several years, but eventually they stopped. Grandma later met our grandfather, built a family with him, and never mentioned Thomas again. The note explained that she had received one final letter from him shortly before her wedding. He wished her happiness and asked her to remember their friendship kindly. Grandma had kept his photograph because, in her words, some people remain important to us even when life takes us in different directions.

My aunt looked uncomfortable. She wondered whether our grandfather had known about Thomas and whether Grandma had hidden something more serious. But another sentence in the letter offered a different perspective. Grandma wrote that she had loved our grandfather deeply and had never regretted choosing the life they built together. She simply hadn’t wanted to erase a meaningful chapter of her youth.

Still, one question remained unanswered: why had she kept the envelope tucked so carefully inside the drawer instead of placing it with her other photographs? We searched the dresser again, checking beneath the lining and behind the small wooden compartments. Eventually, my cousin discovered a second, smaller envelope taped beneath the drawer. It contained an address, a recent date written in Grandma’s handwriting, and a name none of us expected to see.
