Emily immediately sent screenshots to her closest friends, asking whether she was misunderstanding something. Within minutes, her group chat exploded. One friend thought it was a prank, another suggested Daniel needed professional help, and her best friend, Sophie, laughed so hard she could barely type. But Emily wasn’t laughing yet. She felt insulted, especially because Daniel had never mentioned splitting the bill or expecting repayment. He had insisted on ordering everything himself, repeatedly telling her not to worry about the price. Now he was treating every rose and every minute of conversation as a financial investment. Sophie finally sent a message that changed the mood: “If he’s sending invoices, let’s show him what a real accounting looks like.” The women began preparing a response, listing the emotional inconvenience of receiving an invoice, the cost of enduring awkward behavior, and a special fee for discovering a red flag before a second date. Emily laughed for the first time that morning.

They titled their masterpiece “Invoice for Unrequested Romantic Services.” Under the items, they listed the cost of smiling politely, listening to exaggerated stories, and pretending not to notice Daniel checking his reflection in every window. They even added a discount for the roses, since flowers were apparently no longer a gift but a taxable business expense. Emily hesitated before sending it, wondering whether the joke would make things worse. Then she remembered his payment deadline and pressed send. Daniel replied less than ten minutes later. His message was furious. He accused her of humiliating him, called her ungrateful, and demanded that she apologize immediately. Emily read the words carefully, realizing that the charming man from the restaurant had disappeared. In his place was someone who believed spending money gave him control over another person. Her friends waited for her response, but Emily already knew she had seen enough.
