The evening had felt like something straight out of a romantic movie. Roses sat on the restaurant table, candles flickered between them, and Daniel seemed determined to make every moment special. He pulled out her chair, ordered an expensive dinner, and told Emily that she deserved to be treated like a queen. She smiled, believing she had finally met a man who understood romance. They laughed, shared stories about their lives, and even discussed what they wanted from future relationships. When Daniel dropped her home, he kissed her hand and said he couldn’t wait to see her again. Emily went to bed smiling, replaying the evening in her mind.

The next morning, she opened her laptop and noticed an email from Daniel. Expecting another sweet message, she clicked it without hesitation. Instead, she found a detailed invoice attached to the email. Dinner: $145. Roses: $60. Parking: $18. Emotional labor: $75. Time spent listening: $50. The total sat at the bottom, followed by a payment deadline. Emily stared at the screen, reading the ridiculous list again and again. At first, she thought it was a joke. Then she noticed his message beneath it: “Please settle this within seven days.” Her smile disappeared. The man who had called her a queen the night before had apparently decided she owed him money for the privilege of his company.
