Douglas reported himself Friday morning. He sold his boat and lake cabin, repaid the Hendricks family every penny, and surrendered the insurance license that had once made him one of the town’s most trusted businessmen. Because he confessed before authorities came looking for him, accepted responsibility, and began making restitution, the judge sentenced him to probation instead of prison. Mrs. Hendricks even wrote a letter asking the court for mercy. His mother never needed to mail the envelope. She had not wanted revenge or humiliation; she had wanted her son to become accountable for what he had done before his lies destroyed even more lives.

Life afterward looked very different for both of them. Douglas began driving his mother to the supper club every Sunday, and she allowed him to do it. Every Thursday, she still climbed onto her red bicycle and rode to the diner where he waited for her. Sometimes, as she approached, she deliberately rang the little bell, and Douglas would look up with a sheepish smile. She never asked him to return the keys she had once trusted him with. What she wanted back was far more important than property or money. She simply wanted to be treated like the capable woman who had raised him—and Douglas never underestimated his mother again.

Douglas reported himself Friday morning.
