Three months later, my phone rang on a Thursday morning. I almost didn’t recognize the number. Then I heard Mrs. Whitaker’s voice. “Carly, I’m calling because I don’t need my house cleaned.” I laughed so hard I had to sit down. She had moved into an apartment near her daughter, and apparently the new place was already spotless. “I just wanted to tell you that I miss Thursdays,” she said. I realized I missed them too. Not the vacuuming or dusting, but the quiet conversations that had somehow become part of both our lives.

That first call lasted nearly two hours. She told me about her new neighbors, her daughter’s cooking, and the ridiculous amount of paperwork involved in moving. I told her about my husband’s latest attempt at fixing the kitchen sink and how badly it had gone. We laughed like old friends who had simply picked up a conversation they had paused yesterday. Before hanging up, she asked, “Same time next Thursday?” I smiled. “Absolutely.” And just like that, Thursday mornings became ours again.

A year passed, and our friendship grew in ways neither of us had expected. I visited her apartment, not wearing my work uniform and carrying cleaning supplies, but wearing jeans and bringing coffee. Sometimes we went out for lunch. Sometimes we sat by her window looking through old photographs. She introduced me to her daughter, who hugged me and said, “Mom talks about you all the time.” I finally understood why Mrs. Whitaker had kept those photographs and letters. She hadn’t been collecting evidence of a housekeeper. She had been preserving memories of someone who had quietly mattered to her.

One afternoon, she handed me a small envelope. Inside was a photograph of the two of us sitting together, laughing over coffee. On the back she had written the date and four simple words: “The best Thursdays I had.” I held the picture for a long moment, trying not to cry. For eight years, I had thought I was simply doing a job. I had cleaned her rooms, polished her furniture, and kept her house in order. But somewhere between the dusting and the ordinary conversations, we had given each other something neither of us had realized we needed. I had gone into her house every Thursday to clean it. Somehow, without either of us planning it, we had ended up cleaning a little of the loneliness from each other’s lives.
