I couldn’t understand why Mrs. Whitaker had kept so many things mentioning me. As I examined the photographs and letters, she explained that her daughter knew all about me and even remembered which day I came to clean. After her husband, George, died, Thursdays had become particularly lonely for her. My visits were something she looked forward to, even when we spent most of our time discussing ordinary things while I worked.

I had always considered those conversations part of my job, but she had come to treasure them as something much more meaningful.

Then Mrs. Whitaker said something that completely changed how I viewed our relationship. “I was lonely, Carly, but that didn’t mean I had the right to make you responsible for my loneliness.” Her words touched me. I admitted that I had deliberately kept our conversations professional because I didn’t want to risk my job or make her uncomfortable. We had both been protecting the same boundary for different reasons. Neither of us had realized how much the other valued those Thursday mornings.

She smiled and told me that she was excited about moving closer to her daughter, but she was worried about losing the familiar connections she had built over the years. Then she asked whether I would call her occasionally after she moved. I laughed, admitting that I had cleared my car because I thought she was going to give me old belongings. Instead, she was offering me something I hadn’t expected: a friendship without any professional obligations.

“Of course I’ll call,” I told her. “Because I want to.” Before leaving, I returned her house key and wrote my personal phone number on a piece of paper. I handed it to her and smiled. “This is the number you call when you don’t need your house cleaned.” She laughed, and we hugged goodbye. For eight years, I had entered her home as an employee. Now, as she prepared to leave, we finally had the freedom to become friends.
