Mom sat down on the porch steps, and Walter sat beside her. Seventeen years ago, he said, a flash flood swept his wife’s car off a bridge into Willow Creek. She was thrown clear and badly hurt, but nine-year-old Daniel stayed trapped in the back seat while the brown water climbed to his chest. He dialed the emergency line from his mother’s phone, and the dispatcher who answered was Margaret Doyle. She stayed on the line for three hours until the rescue boat arrived. “You gave him your first name and nothing else,” Walter said. “We spent years trying to find you.”

Headlights swung into the driveway. Sheriff Cooper stepped out of his car, and Daniel climbed from the back seat without his badge, his uniform wrinkled and his face gray. Cooper handed him a small tape player from the folder. Daniel pressed play, and a thin, terrified boy’s voice filled the porch, followed by a calm woman saying, “Stay with me, sweetheart, I’m right here.” Daniel went completely still. Then his knees gave out, and he dropped into the gravel in front of my mother.
