I reached Louisville before dawn and found Mason asleep on a police station bench, his gloves tucked inside the electric shoe dryer he had refused to leave behind. An officer explained what he had uncovered. Trevor had canceled Mason\u2019s ticket to Savannah in April, weeks before my mother died, without telling anyone. The cheerful messages I had treasured were scripted. Trevor had dictated every line while Mason typed, then left him a house key, frozen dinners, and instructions to tell everyone he was fine.<\/p>\n
