That evening, I drove home to the house Harold and I had painted with our own hands. For the first time all day, I allowed myself to sit in silence. Gordon Ashby\u2019s assistant had arranged for groceries to be delivered, and the bottle of good olive oil Harold had always loved stood beside the stove like an old friend. I cooked slowly and finished every bite, but there was no sense of victory. I was a mother who had signed the order that put her only child in handcuffs.<\/p>\n
