I stopped beneath a parking lot light and turned toward him. “I think I left my phone on the table,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. He immediately offered to retrieve it himself, but I insisted I would be quicker. His expression tightened for a moment before he forced a smile. I walked back toward the restaurant, carefully resisting the urge to run. Every step felt painfully slow, and I could sense him watching me from behind.

The moment I entered, the manager guided me away from the windows and locked the side door. The waitress was already waiting with a glass of water she had set aside for me. She explained that she had noticed his hand passing over my drink while I was in the restroom. At first, she had hesitated to intervene because she feared making a false accusation. When the card was declined, she saw an opportunity to separate us without attracting his attention. She had used the bill as a distraction to get me away safely.

Outside, he remained beside the car, expecting me to return. Eight minutes passed before he approached the restaurant and tried the handle. When he realized the door would not open, he looked through the windows. Then a police cruiser turned into the parking row, its headlights sweeping across the pavement. He immediately stepped away from the entrance and disappeared into the darkness before the officers could reach him.

The police took my statement and arranged for medical testing. I was frightened, confused, and struggling to understand how an ordinary dinner had become something so dangerous. The waitress stayed nearby while I answered their questions, repeating the details she had witnessed. I kept thinking about how easily I might have walked to that car without ever seeing the warning. Her decision to speak up had changed everything, even though she had risked confronting a situation she could not fully predict.
