The roofer’s crew arrived early the next morning and finally began the work they had been paid to complete. They spent two full days finishing the roof, clearing away the neglected materials, and making sure the structure was properly completed. Afterward, a licensed contractor inspected the work and confirmed that the finished roof passed inspection.

Then came the second surprise. The roofer returned $11,000 of the $17,400 my father had originally paid. He said that was everything he could immediately repay. For the remaining balance, he signed a formal agreement promising to make additional payments. My father’s lawyer prepared the terms, leaving a clear record of what was still owed.

That evening, my father stood by the same window where he had spent six miserable weeks watching the unfinished roof. He was still wearing his slippers when the motorcycles came back down his street. Bertram stopped, and my father walked outside to shake his hand. He held it for a long moment before thanking him.

My father had served in the Marines and told Bertram he had never needed anyone to fight for him. Bertram smiled and explained that nobody had fought anyone. They had simply parked outside and asked a difficult question. My father laughed—the first genuine laugh I had heard from him since the roofing nightmare began.
