In January, Dad invited me to dinner and told me to bring nothing but myself. The lights were on, paid for with his own money. The living room was bare where the sectional had been, and nobody tried to pretend otherwise. After we sat down, Dad handed me a plain envelope containing his first repayment and a short note: “You were never the safety net. You were my son.” For once, I wasn’t the reliable one carrying everyone else. I was simply Daniel.

I read the note twice before putting it carefully back into the envelope. Dad didn’t ask whether I was proud of him, and I didn’t give him an easy answer. We ate without discussing bills, credit cards, loans, or what anyone owed. After dinner, Mom brought coffee, and Dad told me about a hardware-store customer who had spent twenty minutes choosing the right screws. He laughed while telling the story, and I realized how much I’d missed hearing him laugh without needing something from me.
