Gloria stood outside the courthouse with an old blue suitcase and nowhere to go. She said she couldn’t return to the shelter because they now knew about the false dates. I offered to pay for two nights at a motel, then told her we’d handle the house through lawyers. She looked at me with tears in her eyes. \u201cYou’re still helping me?\u201d she asked.
