Richard told me that he wanted me to become the company’s next leader. The accounting folders, lawyers, and secret meetings had never been about replacing me. He had been preparing the legal documents needed to transfer responsibility and make sure I was ready to take over.

He said he had watched me closely for years, especially when things became difficult. When employees were overwhelmed, clients became furious, or projects seemed impossible, I stayed calm, listened carefully, solved what I could, and admitted when I needed help. Richard said those qualities mattered more to him than impressive titles or years of experience.

Then he gave me one condition. If I accepted the position, I could never become the kind of leader who made employees feel disposable. He wanted me to remember exactly how frightened I had felt sitting beside him in that park. “You earned this,” he told me, “but never make someone else feel the way you felt this week.”
