The following month, Denise left a small note in my mailbox. It thanked me for teaching her a lesson she should have learned herself. She had also included money for all the rides I had given Sophie during those four years. I tried to return it, but Denise refused. “It’s not payment,” she said. “It’s an apology.” I eventually accepted it and used the money to replace Lily’s worn-out school backpack and buy her the rain boots she had wanted for months. When Lily saw them, she laughed and said, “Mom, I guess something good came out of that rainy day.” I smiled because she was right.

The woman who had once feared that Lily’s wet shoes might ruin her perfect seats finally understood something far more important: protecting a car is easy. Protecting a friendship requires consideration, gratitude, and respect. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for someone is teach them that your kindness has limits.
