At the tire shop, I finally understood what Evan had been doing. Years earlier, the owner had helped Jeremy with a tire when money was tight. Evan had brought $180, insisting it was payment for an old debt. The owner refused the envelope, explaining that Jeremy had never expected repayment. Evan had apparently remembered the favor and decided the responsibility belonged to him.

There were other names on his map, too. Mrs. Donnelly had helped with school transportation. Someone else had brought groceries. Another person had quietly helped when our family was struggling. Evan believed his father had left unfinished promises behind, and he had decided to complete every one of them himself.

I sat with him and explained something I wished he had understood sooner. His father had certainly believed in helping people, but Jeremy also knew how to accept help when he needed it. Evan had not inherited a list of debts. He had inherited his father’s compassion. When I told him that, he finally broke down and admitted he thought I needed him to become the family’s caretaker.
