She climbed out of the back seat in her yellow raincoat, holding a paper plate covered in foil, and walked past her parents without being asked. “I saved you cake, Grandma,” she said at the door. “Mommy said you didn’t want to come, but I didn’t believe her.” I took the plate with both hands. Behind her, Russell stood in the wet gravel, holding a phone that kept showing him the same word. Declined. Priscilla’s coat was still spotless, but her face had finally lost its manners.

I let them in and set out the chipped cup for my granddaughter, because it was the one with the blue flowers she loved. Russell began to speak, then stopped, then began again. He said the dinner was Priscilla’s idea, and Priscilla said it was a misunderstanding, and neither sentence lasted. I did not raise my voice. I opened the folder marked RUSSELL and placed it on the table between us, forty years of tuition, premiums, dues, and quiet transfers. “I never kept this to hold it over you,” I said. “I kept it because I wanted to remember I was a mother before I was a bank.” My son looked at those pages as if he were seeing his own childhood itemized.
