The room went silent. Mom pulled out a chair and sat down, her hands trembling in her lap. “James was your father’s twin brother.” Brian stared at her. “Dad had a twin?” Mom nodded. “You never knew because your father wanted it that way.” She explained that she had met James first when they were young. They fell deeply in love, but James accepted a job overseas and disappeared without promising when he would return. Heartbroken, Mom eventually found comfort in Dad’s kindness. They married, built a family, and created the life we remembered so fondly.

Years later, during a difficult period in their marriage, Mom confessed everything to Dad. She told him James had been her first love, but Dad was the man she had chosen. Dad forgave her. He understood that the past could not compete with the family they had built together. But years later, James suddenly returned. “He wanted to reconnect,” Mom said. “Your father refused. He believed James would destroy everything we had spent years building.” James lowered his eyes. “Your father was right to be afraid.”

Brian frowned. “Then why are you here now?” James looked at both of us. “Because I’m sick.” His voice cracked. “I didn’t come to take anything from your family. I came because I wanted to apologize before I died.” Mom began crying quietly. James stood and walked toward the door. “I’m sorry I came back so late.”

Brian and I exchanged a look. Then Brian stepped forward. “Wait.” James stopped. Brian sighed. “You may have been a stranger to us, but you were still Dad’s brother.” I nodded. “And that means you’re family.” James covered his face as tears finally fell. Mom opened her arms, and for the first time in decades, the three of them cried together. Later that evening, we ordered pizza instead of eating the dinner Mom had prepared. We talked about Dad, laughed at old memories, and cried when we needed to. Before bed, Mom smiled through swollen eyes and said, “Next Sunday, dinner is still happening.” This time, nobody argued.
