The wineglass struck the hardwood and shattered, but nobody moved to clean it up. Derek\u2019s father-in-law, Frank, a retired Navy man, stared at the screen and asked if that was Dad\u2019s daughter. Dad opened his mouth, but nothing came out. For twenty years, he had dismissed my career with a wave, calling it \u201cthe Army thing.\u201d Now an anchor was saying my name and rank with more respect than Dad had ever shown me. Derek stood and quietly said he had never asked anyone to make themselves smaller for him. His wife, Claire, was already crying.<\/p>\n
