Dinner had already gone wrong before we even reached the check. Our orders were mixed up, the food took too long, and the waitress looked like she had been moving without stopping for hours. I left a modest ten percent tip, not because the service had been perfect, but because something about her expression made me hesitate. As we headed toward the door, her voice suddenly cut across the restaurant. “If you cannot tip properly, do not eat out.” My wife immediately wanted the manager. I stopped her and looked back at the waitress. There was anger in her voice, but underneath it I heard something else.

I told my wife to wait and walked toward the host stand. The manager came over expecting a complaint. Instead, I told him I wasn’t there to report the waitress. The service had been overwhelmed, not intentionally careless, and I wanted to understand what was happening. He hesitated before explaining that the restaurant was severely short-staffed. The waitress had been covering extra hours while dealing with a serious family problem at home. I thanked him and walked away. I found her wiping a table near the kitchen, her shoulders tense as though she were waiting to be fired. I put extra cash into the tip jar and left a napkin beside it. But I had no idea what would happen next.
