Dinner had already gone wrong. Mixed orders, a long wait, and a waitress who looked past her limit. I left a modest ten percent, more from understanding than satisfaction, and we headed for the door. Her voice cut across the room. If you cannot tip properly, do not eat out. My wife wanted the manager. I heard something under the edge that was not arrogance. I told her to watch, and I walked back to the host stand.<\/p>\n

The manager arrived ready for a complaint. I told him I was not there to file one. Service had felt overwhelmed, not careless, and the waitress looked burdened by more than a busy shift. He confirmed she was covering extra hours in a short-staffed room while dealing with serious trouble at home. I ended the talk and found her wiping a table, braced for bad news. I put extra cash in the tip jar, enough to more than double what I had left, and tucked a napkin beside it. We all have hard days. I hope yours gets easier. Thank you for your effort. Then we walked to the lot.<\/p>\n
